Mercedes-Benz F015: Luxury In Motion

The Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept was firstly unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show early this year and has been what people are referring to as the future of cars ever seen. The car is a 4-door, 4-passenger, rear wheel drive with an electric hybrid system.

“Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society,” emphasises Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space”. This is true because the car has a very airy and quite big interior space which is achieved through smart packaging, with most of the technology being constructed inside the vehicle’s floor.
The F 015 Luxury in Motion possesses high-strength body ensures optimum safety and supreme comfort for its passengers. At the same time, the bodyshell’s structure provides the ideal basis for impact-protected installation of an F-CELL PLUG-IN HYBRID drive system, for the door concept that makes getting in and out especially easy, and for the communication-oriented seating featuring four lounge chairs in a face-to-face arrangement.
The four rotating individual chairs are also electrically powered and can swing outwards by 30 degrees as soon as the doors are open to allow occupants to exit or enter the car easier.
There are no analog gauges or switches inside the car because everything is controlled through touchscreens which also recognize hand gestures. The driver can take control of the car at any moment by using the rectangular steering wheel that extends from the dashboard of the car.
The F 015 Luxury in Motion is fitted with large LED arrays both in front and the back which emit blue or white light if it’s being driven by a human or by itself accordingly in order for the car to communicates with its surroundings both visually and acoustically. The LED displays at the front and rear as well as a laser projection system directed toward the front are responsible for the visual part, while the acoustic communication repertoire includes both sounds and specific spoken instructions.
The high-precision laser projection system allows the F 015 Luxury in Motion to project a broad cone of light onto the road in front showing important information: for example, a virtual zebra crossing. The amazing ride also has a rear center brake light which is basically a QR code and when scanned will take you to a Mercedes-Benz page to inform you about the concept’s capabilities of the car.
Power comes from a hydrogen fuel cell and plug-in rechargeable batteries which helps the car in making about 268 hp and 294 lb-ft (398 Nm) of torque. The speed increases tremendously from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) at about 6.7 seconds and it will keep going up to 124 mph (200 km/h).
The electric hybrid system has a total range of 1,100 kilometres, including around 200 kilometres of battery-powered driving and around 900 kilometres on the electricity from the fuel cell. This enables the car to cover distances similar to those of a comparable diesel-engined car, but purely on electric power with zero local emissions.
